Hurry
Entering into a very busy season of ministry, pastor John Ortberg asked his friend Dallas Willard, a noted theologian and professor, what he needed to do to stay spiritually healthy. In John's words,
"There was a long pause- with Dallas there was nearly always a long pause - and then he said slowly, 'You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life'. I quickly wrote that down. Most people take notes with Dallas. 'Okay, Dallas, I've got that one. Now what other spiritual nuggets do you have for me? I don't have a lot of time, and I want to get all the spiritual wisdom from you that I can'.
'There is nothing else,' he said, generously acting as if he did not notice my impatience. ' Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day. You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.' " (Soul Keeping by John Ortberg p.19)
...being attentive to the time of the day: when the birds began to sing, and the deer came out of the morning fog, and the sun came up. The reason why we don't take time is a feeling that we have to keep moving. This is a real sickness. We live in the fullness of time. Every moment is God's own good time, His kairos. The whole thing boils down to giving ourselves in prayer a chance to realize that we have what we seek. We don't have to rush after it. It was there all the time, and if we give it time, it will make itself known to us. (Thomas Merton)
Be still, and know that I am God! -Psalm 46:10
More than silence, this is pausing, stepping back and recognizing God's presence and power. Be still, Breathe, Know!
